Write for Us
Inperil is run by staff and volunteers. If something you care about is in peril, help us tell its story and find the hope in it.
Who we're looking for
- Writers for reported features and quick briefs
- Photographers with images from the places you know best
- Illustrators and printmakers for story art and apparel designs
- Fact-checkers and copy editors who love getting the details right
- Social and newsletter helpers who can turn a story into a post
You don't need any professional experience. You just need curiosity, care, and a readiness to work with an editor.
What we publish
| Format | Length | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Feature | 1,200-2,500 words | A reported story with real people, places, and sources |
| Brief | 150-400 words | One clear update with a source link |
| Photo essay | 8-15 images | Your photographs, with captions that tell a story |
Every piece should answer two questions: What's at risk? and Where's the hope?
Our standards
- Cite your sources in the text. Link to the studies, agencies, and reporting you're referencing so readers can check them out.
- Talk to people. Features are better with at least one interview.
- Use your own photos or ones you have permission to use. Just let us know where each photo came from.
How it works
- Pitch it in the form. Tell us the story, why it's relevant now, and why you're the person to tell it.
- Hear back within a week. If it's a fit, an editor will get back to you with a word count and a deadline.
- Draft in a shared Google Doc. Your editor will add comments and ask questions.
- Publish. Your piece goes live with your byline and a contributor page.
The fine print
Volunteers are not paid. You keep the copyright to your work. By publishing with us, you give Inperil the right to publish it on our website, in our newsletter, and on our social media channels, with credit to you. You're free to republish it elsewhere after it appears with us.
